This study was an investigation of the reporting practices in dissertations with quantitative research designs produced by students enrolled in an online Doctor of Education (EdD) program, one that follows the American Psychological Association (APA) standards for reporting research. Limited, empirical information exists about the competencies in quantitative research and reporting that doctoral candidates have when studying online. The purpose of the study was to generate empirical information in reporting research to improve the doctoral program reporting practices. Situated cognition and community of practice constructs provided the theoretical framework to investigate how the combined effort of the doctoral candidate, the advisory committee, and supporting services develop in the doctoral candidate the competencies necessary to produce a complete dissertation report. In this descriptive study, quantitative content analysis was used to determine what APA reporting standards were comprised in dissertation reports included in the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Database from January 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. Data from 145 quantitative dissertations were collected using a coding form. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and contingency tables to examine adherence to APA reporting standards. The findings revealed omissions in reporting essential information as recommended by APA standards, which lessen the value of the dissertation. It is concluded that the reporting practices of doctoral candidates need to be improved. A checklist is recommended to improve the dissertation's writing and evaluation process. The implications for social change are improvement of doctoral candidates' reporting practices and dissertation reports.
