The Identity Development and Coming out Process of Gay Youth in Puerto Rico
Fankhanel, Edward H.
Journal of LGBT Youth, v7 n3 p262-283 2010
The purpose of this study was to gather basic exploratory-descriptive data regarding the self-perceptions and behaviors of Puerto Rican gay youth (16 to 24 years old) during their gay identity development and coming out process. The study was conducted in Puerto Rico to eliminate ethnic minority influences that may be present in Puerto Rican gay youth who live in the continental United States where similar studies have been conducted. Further emphasis is placed in the Puerto Rican family, religion, and cultural values. The participants (N = 217) were selected by availability from the entire island of Puerto Rico. Results as to how Puerto Rican gay youth perceive themselves as well as how they behave during the coming out process (age of coming out, religious beliefs, and counseling needs) are presented in the findings.
