Independent School Success Challenging the Danish Public School System
Ringsmose, Charlotte
Childhood Education, v89 n2 p92-93 2013
Denmark has had a long history of placing a high priority on education and public schooling. It is a declared goal of the Danish welfare system to provide comprehensive schooling, where children from different socioeconomic backgrounds can go to school together and have the same opportunities through education. It is also a declared goal for parents to have a choice of schools (Ministry of Children and Education, 2004). Thus, independent but publically funded schools represent an alternative to the public schools. Despite the high priority on supporting public schools, a growing number of families have opted for "charter-style" or "independent" schools over the last decade. From the performance perspective, independent schools seem very successful, and thus represent a challenge to the public school system. The idea that children meet across different social and economic strata in the public schools of Denmark is being threatened by a flight away from the public schools. It is a challenge for all countries to create equal opportunities through the educational system. It is important that "charter-style" schools be a viable possible choice for the children from socioeconomically disadvantaged families.
