Explored components of group identification for 2,107 adult blacks from the National Study of Black America. Structural equation modeling revealed three dimensions to identity (identification with masses, elites, and rebels) variously associated with sociodemographic and residential variables. These results support at least three reference groups within black identity. (SLD)
