The Collaborative Peer Supervision Group Project: A Continuing Education Model to Promote Professional Competence
Thomasgard, Michael; Warfield, Janeece
Zero to Three (J), v25 n5 p29-34 May 2005
Thomasgard, a physician, and Warfield, a psychologist, describe the multidisciplinary Collaborative Peer Supervision Group Project, originally developed and implemented in Columbus, Ohio. Collaborative Peer Supervision Groups (CPSGs) foster the development of case-based, interdisciplinary, continuing education. CPSGs are designed to improve the clinician's ability to assess, treat, or appropriately refer infants and young children with developmental variations, problems, and disorders of mental health. A typical Collaborative Peer Supervision Group consists of two co-moderators, one of whom has infant mental health expertise, and anywhere from 8 to 15 participants. Members are drawn from a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to, child and adolescent psychiatry, child psychology, early intervention, nursing, pediatrics, and social work. Meetings are held at least once a month for approximately 1 hour. All members take turns presenting a case or topic, while the remaining members become peer consultants, modeling mutual respect and support for the presenter. With a grant from the federal Maternal and Child Health Training Program, the CPSG replication project created a Web site providing detailed, downloadable documents that describe every step in forming, sustaining, and evaluating a new CPSG.
