Careful reading of proverbs can aid an individual to develop self-awareness by providing insights into what one cultural group considers desirable human behavior. Respect for the elderly can be taught to the young through the study of proverbs. Through their proverbs, the Mexicans reveal their friendliness, love of animals, sense of humor, and philosophy of interpersonal relationships. Teachers of Mexican American students can use these proverbs to acquaint students with customs, attitudes, values, religion, and humor of their ancestors. Spanish teachers at the college level can use this book as an introduction to the folk philosophy and folk wisdom of Mexico. In some respects, this is a pyschology book. Instead of taking a college course entitled "Mexican Psychology," all that is needed to understand the Mexican mind is to carefully read Mexican proverbs. The 356 proverbs are presented in 5 categories: Dichos Filosoficos/Philosophical Proverbs, Dichos Consejeros/Proverbs that Advise, Dichos Religiosos/Religious Proverbs, Dichos Humoristicos/Humorous Proverbs, and Dichos de Animales/Proverbs about Animals. Each proverb is given first in Spanish followed by the English translation. Alternate meanings are given in some cases. The proverbs were collected over a 2-year interval through interviews, conversations, and travel in Southern Texas and Northern Mexico. (BRR)
