Perspectives. Teacher's Guide [and] Reflections of History [and] From Cottages to Corporations [and] World War I, The Home Front [and] The Great Depression.
Procter & Gamble Co., Cincinnati, OH.
This publication includes a teacher's guide and four self-contained teaching units of primary source materials for use in secondary U.S. history, government, and sociology classes. Each unit, designed as supplemental material for one or two class periods, contains historical public records and documents from Procter and Gamble's archives and background readings and activities. In the unit "Reflections of History," students examine the advertising of five different time periods between the 1890s and the 1950s to get an impression of the styles and interests of the times. The unit "From Cottages to Corporations" focuses on America in the 1800s and cites the beginnings of the Procter and Gamble corporation as a way of encouraging students to examine the growth of companies in their areas as one measure of history. Primary source documents presented in this unit include a partnership agreement, a stock certificate, and a certificate of incorporation. The "World War I - The Home Front" unit talks about the home front activities of the United States, particularly some of the ways business responded to the war effort. In this unit, students examine five primary source documents, including a War and Navy Department certificate, an employee bulletin board notice, a poster for the Red Cross war fund drive, a personal letter of William Cooper Procter, and an advertisement of the period. In the "Great Depression" unit, students learn about conditions of this period and how one business tried to cope with the crisis. Examined are company memos to employees, a grocery store poster, and newspaper ads of the early 1930s. (RM)
