Texas A&M Texarkana Illustrates Best Practices in PLA
Delleville, Valerie
Journal of Continuing Higher Education, v65 n2 p132-134 2017
Some institutions' prior learning assessment (PLA) programs are far more successful than others. As with any strategic initiative, the best-intentioned policy is only as good as the implementation, operations, and people behind it. Beyond progressing through the change management process, ensuring sustainability is critical to long-term PLA program success and the student benefits that come with it. This article presents a discussion of Texas A&M University's Texarkana campus (TAMUT), where a robust culture of PLA exists in its Bachelor of Arts in Applied Science program. As of 2013, 52% of TAMUT's student population were at least 25 years of age or older (TAMUT, 2017). TAMUT offers traditional forms of PLA such as Advanced Placement (AP) exams, College Level Examination (CLEP), and American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendation, in addition to innovative PLA forms such as two separate portfolio development models. Lisa Myers, Coordinator of the Bachelor of Arts in Applied Science (BAAS) program at TAMUT, leads the discussion. Myers also an instructor in Adult Education, has experience with traditional portfolio development and leads the charge in offering a variety of PLA methods to students in the BAAS program. Using her knowledge of the theory and process of PLA, she has worked to better develop and promote the process.
