On the Road Again
Olson, Catherine Applefeld
Teaching Music, v17 n6 p40-43 Apr 2010
Trained as a classical pianist, Kevin Tison, earned his Bachelor of Music degree at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He was directing the music ministry at a southern California church when the opportunity arose to kick-start a faltering high school choir program for two hours a day. He taught at Fountain Valley High School in Orange County, California, for five years, during which he's been a kind of singing travel guide, helping students better understand both music and the world around them. This article discusses the life of Tison as a music educator and how he enriched the lives of his students through travel and music. Traveling with his students has become a signature for Tison, who has brought ensembles to New Orleans, Hawaii, and France, among other locales. The trips and competitions mesh well with Tison's drive to infuse his students with learning that extends well beyond the classroom. He shares that his philosophy of teaching music is centered around teaching life. He mentions that in the short term, his goal is making beautiful music, and in the long term, his goal is making beautiful people.
