A national sample of journalists, consisting of 700 television news photographers, newspaper photographers, television news directors, newspaper editors, and journalism educators, was asked to evaluate the ethical conduct in eight situations involving alleged invasion of privacy by photography. The respondents found journalistic conduct to be unethical in four of the eight situations but exhibited considerable uncertainty about ethical conduct in the other four situations. For seven of the eight situations, television photographers showed more timidity than newspaper photographers about approving journalistic conduct that might constitute an invasion of privacy. Television news directors showed substantial disagreement with television photographers concerning ethical conduct, as did newspaper editors with newspaper photographers. (Author/RL)
