Issues in California Community Colleges. Forum, 1986.
Petit, Susan, Ed.
Forum, v3 Spr 1986
This issue of "Forum," a journal designed to provide a marketplace of ideas for California community college faculty, contains six articles on current educational concerns. First, "Seeking a Working Vision: Community Colleges and the Mission Statement," by Richard A. Garcia, argues that community colleges must put joint emphasis on vocational and transfer education, with remediation offered as a support service. Next, Bruce Anders' article, "A Pair of Shoes: Relating Remediation to Transfer," recommends ways to make remedial courses relate more directly to students' interests and majors. In "Remediation and Placement," Evanne Jardine puts forth an argument for more comprehensive student testing, placement, and follow-up, and more evaluation of remedial programs. Judy Markline's article, "A Computerized Model for Program Evaluation," describes a model which provides comprehensive information on student outcomes. Next, "Learning Disabilities and Academia," by Martha Kanter offers information on the nature of learning disabilities and describes programs and services being offered by community colleges. Finally, in "Teaching the Legislature," John McFarland encourages community college faculty to take an active political role in working for the improvement of programs and facilities at their schools. A listing of the Academic Senate Officers and Executive Committee members is included. (LAL)
