Students' Strategies and Difficulties: The Case of Algebraic Inequalities.
Tsamir, P.; Almog, N.
International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, v32 n4 p513-24 Jul-Aug 2001
Describes a study on secondary school students' ways of thinking about linear, quadratic, rational, and square-root inequalities. Indicates that using graphic representations of parabolas when solving rational and quadratic inequalities usually yielded correct solutions and difficulties arose when students failed to reject the excluded values or chose inappropriate, logical connectives. Suggests some educational implications. (Contains 18 references.) (Author/ASK)
