The middle grades years has a profound and lasting impact on student achievement, including opportunities for college and career access and readiness. It is important that students at this age understand college and college life. Such understanding can help middle grades students focus on career goals and postsecondary planning, and this awareness is especially important for our most vulnerable students. In a program called "College Immersion," seventh grade students from a high-need urban area spent 1 week on a local college campus attending specially designed college classes and experiencing collegiate activities. This qualitative research study examined 3 years of observations and 5 years of survey data related to students' understandings of college after experiencing a week of college life. It was found that following College Immersion, seventh grade students (1) displayed positive feelings toward college; (2) reported feeling comfortable on the campus; (3) reframed and expanded their academic identity; and (4) looked toward a future that included postsecondary options. Such a positive and successful early college experience may help students know and understand expectations and experiences related to college work and college life.
