Communication of Geometrical Structure and Its Relationship to Student Mathematical Achievement.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the mathematical structures inherent in grade 7 geometry curriculum objectives can be used to improve the communication of the objectives to students. Teacher inservice based upon geometrical properties and structures was combined with student teaching materials to try to improve student achievement in geometry. The subjects were 671 grade 7 students and 20 teachers in a large school board in Ontario (Canada). An analysis of the results reveal that the geometry objectives used in the study can be implemented successfully at grade 7 with the exception of rotational symmetry, some construction, and formal transformations. Achievement levels for students whose teachers received inservice in geometry were higher and there were no significant gender differences in achievement at grade 7 when an equal opportunity to learn was present. Included are: the introduction; a review of the literature; methodology; results; and conclusions, discussion, and recommendations. Appended are a list of geometry objectives, geometry evaluation and teacher instructions, student instructional materials, and teacher questionnaires. (KR)
