Implementing Multiple Intelligences: The New City School Experience. Fastback 407.
Hoerr, Thomas R.
This brief reviews the concept of multiple intelligences (MI) and discusses the implementation of the theory of MI in the New City School, an independent school in St. Louis (Missouri). The theory of MI, as developed by Howard Gardner, says that there are at least seven different intelligences: linguistic, logical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Everyone possesses some degree of each of the seven, but no two individuals have exactly the same configuration. MI theory is not a theory of learning styles nor a curriculum in its own right. An MI approach means that different intelligences are recognized and valued. The implementation of MI theory in a school is context- and teacher-specific, but the three essentials in implementing MI theory are putting students first, educating all stakeholders, and recognizing teachers as the key. Most MI classrooms provide cues, such as posters, that remind students and teachers of the intelligences. It is not realistic to include all intelligences in every lesson, but remaining aware of the possibilities means that they can be brought into lessons frequently. Educational assessment should take multiple intelligences into account through performance assessments such as portfolios. Educating parents about multiple intelligences is a key component of school success with MI theory. (Contains one figure and six references.) (SLD)
