An Instrumental Approach to Culture Study in General Music: Use a Musical Instrument from Another Culture to Introduce the Sounds, Stories, and History of that Culture
Carolin, Michael
Music Educators Journal, v92 n5 p38 May 2006
Conflicting philosophies exist in education today between those who believe that the traditional approach to curriculum is the best and those who believe there are better ways. At the core of both approaches is the sincere desire to give children the best education in the world. In this article, the author uses integration to bring the study of cultures into the general music class, and uses musical instruments as a point of departure. He hopes that music teachers can explore new ways of integrating various subjects into their general music lessons, while still teaching the music skills children are expected to learn. Thus, he states that through organology--the study of musical instruments--the class can explore the problems and promise of cultures when they collide.
