This Too Is Music.
Upitis, Rena
This book focuses on music as a subject relating to all other disciplines. "On the Teaching of Music," the first of 12 chapters, sets the theoretical and philosophical basis for a child-centered, subject-integrated teaching approach through autobiographical narrative. Chapter 2, "A Music Playground," advocates the presentation of materials and tools in an open-ended classroom approach that allows the child to provide content and construct personal intellectual structures. Chapter 3, "Music and Movement," describes the learning possibilities inherent in movement games and activities. Chapter 4, "Trust and Risk," encourages personal engagement as a means of creating trust, which permits risk taking in learning. Other subjects discussed in following chapters include: "Performance";"Improvisation: Play First, Write Later"; "Developing Notational Systems: Composition"; "Music and Story"; and "Making Instruments.""Johnny Monotone" denies the concept of tone deafness and proposes alternate explanations for poor pitch and gives approaches to correct pitch. Chapter 11 "An Evolving Knowledge of Music," discusses evaluation issues. The last chapter, "Teachers as Mentors: Betty Ferguson," pays personal tribute to a teacher and teaching role model. The book concludes with an "Afterword"; "Appendix: Some Music Playground Resources"; and "References and Bibliography of Influential Works." (MM)
