Marvelous Mud
Keeler, Rusty
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n198 p78-79 Mar-Apr 2011
The author visited the Open Spaces Preschool in Whangarei, New Zealand and was surprised to see the most amazing natural preschool play. There were six preschoolers stripped down to tee shirts and underpants slipping, slopping, and sliding in the dirt spot which had now become the most lovely, silky-smooth deep-brown mud ever. Studies have recently revealed the positive qualities of earth, soil, and mud. Science says that being barefoot is good for everyone. Mud has microscopic bacteria that soothes, relaxes, and calms one down. Now why not take a deep breath and give a go? Talk it over with staff, parents, and children. Designate an area for mud play.
