In this review, the author explores an often-used process in research--the mind map. He uses this method in his own research and artwork. He also uses this extensively with students, particularly master students when they are trying to surround issues in their thesis projects. Mind maps are closely associated with brainstorming, as brainstorming is often a part of doing a mind map, whether individually or in a group setting. Mind mapping as a research process, art-making processes, and teaching and learning process attempts to more fully recognize the complexity and interdependence of phenomena. As one part of much grander endeavours, mind mapping may offer opportunities for better understanding of the relationships among convergent and divergent aspects of phenomena. Depending on one's perspective, the principles of mind mapping have derived from, or are used in, artists' practices. Several examples in this review demonstrate the possibilities for using mind mapping as part of the creative processes. This is true for practices in research as well--from idea generation and development to data analysis and synthesis. And as a process for teaching and learning, mind maps can aid in curriculum and project development. Mind mapping is a useful process in such a broad range of artistic and educational endeavors because it is about understanding relationships. The possibility that it may mirror the architecture and processes of people's brains in the creation of mind should not be all that surprising. (Contains 5 images.)
