Numicon, Numeracy and a Special Need
Horner, Vikki
Mathematics Teaching, n179 p28-31 Jun 2002
Charlotte, the author's 11-year-old daughter, was born with Down syndrome, and is currently attending the local middle school. In terms of her disability Charlotte is developing very well and has a reading age of 9+, however her maths skills age is approximately 4 years. It is not necessarily the case that if a child has good language and literacy skills, that she/he automatically has good number skills. In this article, the author shares her experience with how Numicon math materials developed the numeracy skills of her daughter. Numicon is designed for all foundation stage and KS1 children. The nursery teaching programme introduces four key ideas: pattern, order, counting, and comparison. The reception teaching programme builds on this work and introduces seven key ideas: more pattern, ordering, counting, compression, place value notation, addition, and subtraction. The Y1 teaching program has three strands: pattern, counting, and arithmetic. All activities have links to the foundation stage curriculum and the national numeracy strategy framework.
