AAAP's Continuing Education Committee surveyed AAAP members in 1975 to determine the history and quality of their formal instruction in avian medicine, their opinion of the importance of avian medicine in veterinary medical education, and what effective methods could be used to stimulate interest in avian medicine. A mechanism for augmenting the relevance of instruction in laboratory animal medicine is suggested: the identification of practice-relevant content. This identification helps foster a positive attitude toward the subject and facilitates the retention of information. (LBH)

The introduction of the specialties and their developing residency programs in veterinary medicine have caused problems for veterinary medical colleges. Among the problems are the tendency to pattern programs after their human medical counterparts, funding problems, program length and curriculum, and faculty and equipment requirements. (JMD)

The University of Idaho, in cooperation with the Washington, Oregon, and Idaho (WOI) Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine, developed an off-campus facility for the study of food animal medicine. The objectives, design, and program of the regional center are described. (BH)

For the years 1969-75, there was no significant difference in the proportions of male and female applicants admitted to the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota. It is hoped that the sex-typing of veterinary medicine by counselors, teachers, parents, and veterinarians will diminish. (LBH)

At Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, training in preventive medicine is incorporated into all four years of the curriculum. The curriculum is described with focus on the fourth year practical course that involves problem solving, using various herds in the area. (JMD)

Greater flexibility in clinical instruction in the veterinary field through the introduction of a course in Correlative Medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine is described. Twenty-five audiotutorial lessons in laboratory animal medicine were evaluated by students enrolled in courses at six schools of veterinary medicine. Results indicate that the lessons are an effective learning resource, that prior knowledge did not significantly influence final test scores, and that subjective qualities did not affect learning.…

A preceptorship initiated in 1975 is described that incorporates rounds, self-instruction, independent study, and the desirable characteristics of off-campus programs. The student is given self-assessment tests each week during the 12-week period and the final evaluation is given by an outside examiner. (LBH)

Societal changes that will influence the veterinary profession are examined including: population, energy, and food; pet ownership and veterinary service; government regulation; numbers of veterinarians; and percentages of salaried veterinarians. (LBH)

Presented are an American Board of Veterinary Toxicology survey and evaluation of the training resources available in graduate programs in toxicology located in colleges of veterinary medicine. Regulatory toxicology, number of toxicologists needed, and curriculum are also discussed. (JMD)
