Grad-School Blues
Fogg, Piper
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n24 pB12 Feb 2009
Graduate school is gaining a reputation as an incubator for anxiety and depression. Social isolation, financial burdens, lack of structure, and the pressure to produce groundbreaking work can wear heavily on graduate students, especially those already vulnerable to mental-health disorders. Studies have found that graduate school is not a particularly healthy place. However, there is still a stigma among graduate students about acknowledging mental-health problems: in a highly competitive atmosphere, it can be seen as admitting weakness. This article enumerates remedies to mitigate anxiety and depression.
