Our Digital Conversion
Edwards, Mark
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v78 n1 p4-9 Sep 2012
In this article, the author describes their digital conversion initiative at Mooresville Graded School District. The project has placed a MacBook Air laptop in the hands of every 3rd through 12th grader and their teachers in the district over the past four years, with over 5,000 computers distributed. But they believe their academic successes have less to do with the use of technology than with a fundamental rethinking of teaching and learning district wide. They've adopted curricular changes and raised their expectations for collaboration and use of data for all teachers. They have developed an instructional design that combines digital tools, creative pursuits, multi-varied collaboration, discovery research, independence, and cultural synergy--all focused toward student learning and academic achievement. Since the launch of their initiative, the number of students receiving "proficient" ratings on state exams has increased 20 percentage points, and the number of schools meeting adequate yearly progress has increased from two to six.
