Teaching the Love of Learning
Church, Ellen Booth
Early Childhood Today, v21 n1 p34-43 Aug-Sep 2006
As every early childhood teacher knows, providing children with activity and material choices, stimulating multi-sensory activities, and positive support and novel challenges can truly inspire children's love of learning. Now there is the additional support of brain research. Marian Diamonds of the University of California at Berkeley reports that the classroom environment has an effect on brain growth and learning. In this article, the author explains that a child's love of learning is nurtured by expanding on his or her own inquisitive nature. Early childhood teachers know that teaching means much more than lessons and standards. These teachers are responsible for creating an environment of support that allows children to develop their own ideas, express their feelings, take risks, make choices, and most of all, grow to be strong, thinking individuals. This article also includes suggestions for arranging an "I Love Learning" classroom.
