Transportation Technology: Rail Transport and Logistics
Lang, Aaron B.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v70 n8 p12-17 May-Jun 2011
Transportation can simply be defined as the movement of goods, services, and people from one location to another. Without an efficient means to transport goods from place to place, the economy would be nothing like it is today. Throughout the history of the United States, American railroads have paved the way toward creating a nation of great prosperity. With the development of the interstate highway system and air freight transportation, there have been many changes in the dynamics of our national transportation system over the past century. In this article, the author provides a perspective and some background on domestic railroads and describes some of the reasons that rail transport is once again on the rise. (Contains 4 figures.)
