"Lettuce" Learn Math: Teaching Mathematics with Seeds and Centimeters
Rickard, Laura N.; Wilson, Colette
Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, v11 n8 p368-377 Apr 2006
"Lettuce Learn Math" is an interdisciplinary program that has effectively linked a small-scale agricultural production system to a sixth-grade mathematics and science curriculum. The mathematical concepts and skills, including measurement and geometry, taught in this project met and often exceeded the standards set by New York state for sixth-grade mathematics skills. This term-long exercise was developed as a method of creating a context in which to solve authentic, real-world problems. Many experienced mathematics teachers agree that the most powerful learning experiences are relevant ones that require active input and participation from the student. (Contains 6 figures.)
