Four Predictions for Students' Tomorrows
Palmer, Erik
Educational Leadership, v73 n6 p18-22 Mar 2016
What pieces of their education do adults actually use? Many highly successful people gain success without remembering large amounts of material that schools teach. Erik Palmer suggests that educators to take a closer look at what parts of their education have been critical to your adult success and what they wish they had been taught. In addition, they need to consider what their students' worlds will look like when they are adults and what skills they'll need to navigate that world. He makes four predictions that he believes should shape instruction today: There will still be an Internet. Students should be taught how to seek out and evaluate information. Salespeople will still exist. Students need to learn reasoning and persuasive skills so they can craft their own arguments and evaluate others' messages. Listening will be important. Listening in the future will require literacy not just in oral communication but an understanding of how music, sound, and images can be used to make a point. People will still be speaking. Being able to craft and deliver a message effectively will increase students' chances of success.
