The Effects of Leadership Style on School Culture and Teacher Effectiveness

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between principal leadership style and school culture and to determine what effect both factors have on teacher effectiveness. This study was based on the perceptions of teachers and principals in Title I elementary schools (Grades 1-5), with high ESL populations in 10 schools within a West Tennessee public school district. The study examined teacher perceptions of the principal's leadership style and school culture, based on teacher responses on the TELL Tennessee survey and the Tennessee New Teacher Project's Instructional Culture Insight survey. Also, results from the 2012-2013 TVAAS were examined for the schools involved in this study. The statistical analyses included linear regression analysis, Pearson's R, and analysis of variance tests (ANOVA). The findings in this study showed that the leadership styles utilized by principals have an effect on the culture of the school.
