With the massive amounts of conflicting information and opinion bombarding us from all sides today, it has never been more important to teach young people to suspend judgment, to weigh evidence, and to consider multiple perspectives. Teaching students the craft of argument writing--not only in language arts classes, but also in social studies, science, and the other disciplines--helps them develop these learning dispositions. In this article, Mary Ehrenworth discusses how educators can help argument flourish across the curriculum. Here are a few of her tips: (1) Implement flash debates, in which students hone their oral argument skills by engaging in quick, one-on-one debates on questions raised by the texts they are studying. (2) Collaborate to create a strategic curriculum matrix in which students learn argumentation skills progressively in different content areas, with teachers cueing them to transfer these skills from one discipline to others. (3) Develop text sets for each argument topic that include a variety of perspectives, levels of nuance, and degrees of objective, so that students can spend most of their time reading, critiquing, thinking, and writing instead of surging the Internet looking for materials.
