Microcomputers in Alberta Schools, 1986. A Final Report on the Results of a Resource Survey of Alberta Schools.
Petruk, Milton W.
This is the fifth in a series of annual studies conducted by the Alberta (Canada) Department of Education in order to gather information about the nature and extent of the growth and development of instructional computing in Alberta schools. Areas covered by the survey include: (1) description of the school population; (2) schools that have designated an individual as computer coordinator; (3) teachers making "extensive use" of computers; (4) number of microcomputers in schools; (5) location of microcomputers in the schools; (6) schools having specially equipped microcomputers (i.e., with French characters and/or attachments for physically disadvantaged students); (7) arrangements for microcomputer maintenance; (8) access to microcomputers outside normal class time; (9) percentage of students who have studied or will study keyboarding; (10) administrative uses of microcomputers; (11) microcomputer-related training for teachers; and (12) buildings and facilities. Findings are reported separately for all schools, then for elementary, junior high, senior high, mixed divisional, and urban and rural schools. Almost 200 tables and 30 graphs are used to present the results of analyses of the data received from 1,345 Alberta schools. Comparison of these data with the findings of prior studies suggests that, although the number of computers in Alberta schools continues to grow, the rate of growth is beginning to diminish. The survey instruments and cover letters are appended. (MES)
