"Let It Rest:" Reflecting on Instructional Practice
Fontichiaro, Kristin
School Library Monthly, v27 n8 p8-10 May-Jun 2011
Top Chef is one of America's top food television shows. In one episode, lead judge Tom Colicchio, chef and restaurant owner, chides a contestant for hurriedly slicing a piece of meat as soon as it had emerged from the oven. The meat was fully cooked, but the competitor had not "let it rest," or let it steep in its own juices outside the oven for about ten minutes, before slicing. Doing so would have yielded a juicier meal. In school library practice, busy librarians are not taking time to "let it rest"--allowing their thoughts to marinate and reflect. How can it, when a high school librarian may be working with as many as three classes at a time, or an elementary fixed-schedule librarian's next class arrives before the previous one has left? As the school year and the second year of "Nudging toward Inquiry" come to a close, it can be valuable to take some "resting and juicing" time and to step back and see what has been accomplished collectively... and where the future journey may lie. In this article, the author suggests taking a few moments to recharge mental batteries to "let it rest."
