The Voice of Feedback: A Study of Asynchronous Audio Communication in the Online Classroom
Johnson Van Den Elzen, Jolene M.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The interaction between learners and the instructor in an online learning environment has been shown to contribute to increases in learning through promotion of a cooperative and collaborative environment, which allows students to learn from course materials, the instructor, and each other (Jiang & Ting, 2000; Jung et al., 2002; Kollock, 1998; Moore & Kearsely, 2005). This interaction need not be in the form of face-to-face discourse; rather, it can occur using media and technologies to facilitate the interaction (Collins & Berge, 1998). Previous research has highlighted the utility of using technologies such as voice and video to increase interaction in the online course room (Beldarrain, 2006; Boulos et al., 2006; Brescia & Miller, 2006; Cameron & Anderson, 2006; Mason, 2006; West, Wright, Gabbatas, & Graham, 2006). Therefore, this mixed methods exploratory, quasi-experimental comparative study was designed to identify differences emanating from the use of audio instructor feedback as opposed to only text feedback, specifically in terms of differences in sense of satisfaction, sense of community, and student performance. Results of the analysis of these three variables did not reveal evidence to suggest differences between individual students who received audio and those who only received text feedback from their instructors. However, through qualitative analysis and nearly significant elements of the analysis related to opportunities for communicative participation and encouragement and support for higher levels of communication and discussion, this study supported the importance of communication, particularly in terms of frequency and timeliness of feedback and communication received.
