Heart and Reason: A Comparison of John Dewey's "A Common Faith" and His "Religious" Poems
Miedema, Siebren
Religious Education, v105 n2 p175-187 Mar 2010
In this article a comparison is drawn between the way in which the pragmatist philosopher and pedagogue John Dewey addressed religious issues and his view on Religious Education in his poetic narratives and in his scholarly writings, especially in his "magnus opus" on religion, "A Common Faith". Do we gain deeper insight into Dewey's view on religion and the religious comparing his two-fold articulated narratives; that is, poetic and scholarly ones? By using a double and reciprocal hermeneutics on Dewey and religion I will shed light on the relationship "in religiosis" of Dewey the academic and the poet. Is there also a lesson to learn here for religious educators?
