A SIX-STEP PROCESS IS DESCRIBED FOR DEFINING JOB-RELEVANT OBJECTIVES FOR THE TRAINING OF MILITARY PERSONNEL. (1) A FORM OF SYSTEM ANALYSIS IS OUTLINED TO PROVIDE THE CONTEXT FOR THE STUDY OF A PARTICULAR MILITARY OCCUPATION SPECIALTY. (2) A TASK INVENTORY IS MADE OF THE MAJOR DUTIES IN THE JOB AND THE MORE SPECIFIC JOB TASKS ASSOCIATED WITH EACH DUTY. (3) RATIONALES ARE FORMULATED FOR DETERMINING WHAT TASKS TO TEACH AND THE LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY STUDENTS SHOULD ATTAIN. (4) A DETAILED TASK DESCRIPTION IS PREPARED, BREAKING EACH TASK INTO THE SPECIFIC ACTS REQUIRED FOR ITS PERFORMANCE. (5) KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL COMPONENTS INVOLVED IN TASK PERFORMANCE ARE IDENTIFIED AND SYNTHESIZED INTO A SET OF HIERARCHICAL INTERRELATIONSHIPS. (6) EACH TASK AND ITS COMPONENTS ARE EXPRESSED IN THE FORM OF A TRAINING OBJECTIVE, INCLUDING THE PERFORMANCE EXPECTED OF THE STUDENT, THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE PERFORMANCE WILL BE OBSERVED OR MEASURED, AND A STANDARD OF ACCURACY OR SPEED TO BE ACHIEVED.
