The Role of the Chief Student Affairs Officer in Promoting the Jesuit Mission of the University

"The Role of the Chief Student Affairs Officer in Promoting the Jesuit Mission of the University" is a qualitative comparative case study of three lay (non-cleric, non-Jesuit) chief student affairs officers employed in three U.S. Jesuit higher educational institutions. As the number of Jesuits decreases, a significant question is how the traditions, values and goals of the distinctive Jesuit educational heritage is handed on. Research questions include: 1) How has the chief student affairs officer been formed in Jesuit mission? 2) How does the chief student affairs officer form other student affairs professionals in Jesuit mission? 3) In light of the Jesuit principles of "cura personalis" and "men and women for others," how does the chief student affairs officer encourage the development of the whole student? 4) In student affairs, under what circumstances and with which topics does the chief student affairs officer experience conflict with the Jesuit mission? Findings include: 1) All of the CSAOs had been educated at some point in a Jesuit institution despite the fact that this was not a criterion for selection in the study or for employment in their current student affairs position. 2) CSAOs are intentional about articulating the institution's Jesuit values and Catholic identity to prospective student affairs applicants, and they employ a range of activities to educate current staff about the Jesuit mission. 3) Holistic development of students is fostered by a variety of division-sponsored programs, procedures and policies. 4) As described by the CSAOs, areas of potential and real conflict between student affairs issues and the values of Jesuit mission-based education are consistent with findings of other researchers (Estanek, 1996; Lannon, 2000; Mussi, 2008). 5) These lay CSAOs are committed to creating and sustaining a distinctive Jesuit student affairs division.
