Climate Change Draws World Attention: The 2007 Nobel Peace Award Goes to Gore and IPCC
Bisland, Beverly Milner; Ahmad, Iftikhar
Social Education, v72 n2 p69-74 Mar 2008
In the fall of 2007, the Nobel Committee awarded their Peace Prize to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (a scientific intergovernmental body set up by the World Meteorological Organization and by the United Nations Environment Program) and to former Vice-President Al Gore, Jr. The committee praised the United Nations panel for creating an "ever broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming." In this article, the authors examine the issue of climate change, and redress an imbalance in the media coverage of the award by looking extensively at the work of the IPCC as well as that of Gore. They recommend activities and resources for teaching about climate change in the classroom. (Contains 21 notes.)
