Displays: Entering a New Dimension
Starkman, Neal
T.H.E. Journal, v34 n5 p24 May 2007
As display technologies prepare to welcome 3-D, the 21st-century classroom will soon bear little resemblance to anything students and teachers have ever seen. In this article, the author presents the latest innovations in the world of digital display technology. These include: (1) Touchlight, an interactive touch screen program that takes a normal sheet of acrylic plastic and transforms it into a high-bandwidth input/output surface suitable for gesture-based interaction; (2) iSkia --- Greek for "the shadow" --- a presentation product which generates a "mask" that corresponds to the shape of a person standing in front of the projection screen, thus preventing the image from blinding the presenter; and (3) Heliodisplay, a breakthrough in 3-D displays that transforms ambient air using a proprietary multi-stage system of modifying the optical characteristics within a planar region in which polychromatic light is scattered on this surface such that the image appears visible to the viewer.
