How Many Licks?
Mamber, Stephen W.; Gantenbein, Alice
Primary Science, n146 p18-20 Jan 2017
Tootsie Pops, manufactured by Tootsie Roll Industries of Chicago, Illinois, are spherical hard-candy lollipops with a chocolate-flavoured, chewy center. While Tootsie Pops have been around since 1931, it was a television commercial made in 1969 that captured the attention of many. The commercial, an amusing animated cartoon, posed the following question, "How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a 'Tootsie Pop?''" There been formal scientific experiments designed to answer the question. Stimulated by a story about Tootsie Pops and Tootsie Roll Industries that appeared on the CBS Sunday Morning television show (Giles, 2014), the authors decided that counting the number of licks it would take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop would make an excellent science and mathematics investigation for elementary school students. The investigation is presented in this article.
