America's Consumerocracy: No Safe Haven
Daily, Nancy Lee; Swain, Letitia Price; Huysman, Mary; Tarrant, Cynthia
English Journal, v99 n3 p37-41 Jan 2010
Recently the authors completed a course designed to expand and deepen their knowledge about America's consumerocracy and the methods that give it the immense power it has. As a result of their reading and shared thinking in this course, Teaching Adolescents in a Consumer Society, they feel strongly motivated and better prepared to craft educational responses to the relentless, all-encompassing pressure to buy--from which, they have discovered, neither they nor their students have any safe haven. In this article, the authors present ideas from their course that they believe readers of "English Journal" may find useful as they design units on consumption and critical thinking for their students. The authors share some of what they learned about exploitative commercialism, social class, and adolescents and offer some recommendations for other teachers. (Contains 1 note.)
