Premedical Education for Negroes: Interpretations and Recommendations Based Upon a Survey in Fifteen Selected Negro Colleges.
Buggs, Charles W.
A survey was undertaken to discover reasons for the failure of the average Negro premedical student to reach the fifteenth percentile on medical aptitude tests. Curriculum offerings, personnel, physical facilities and equipment for administering a premedical program at 15 accredited colleges are examined. In addition, an analysis is provided of information contributory to an explanation for the low level of achievement of Negro students on the medical aptitude tests other than the known inadequate backgrounds and foundations. Such factors include: (1) the status and attitudes of science teachers; (2) the organization of the sciences in the colleges surveyed; (3) duties, responsibilities, and authorities of department chairmen; (4) appointment of personnel; (5) science instruction in the colleges surveyed; (6) teaching loads; (7) turnover of science personnel; and (8) opportunities for professional growth.
