There is no immigration problems in Greece today. On the contrary, the country's economic development makes it necessary for Greek workers who have emigrated temporarily to return and be integrated into the production system. The educational policy for emigrant workers' children involves: (1) ensuring that children who have settled abroad know their mother tongue; and (2) giving them the opportunity to pursue their education in secondary and higher education establishments when they return home. The major piece of migrant education legislation is Decree Number 695/1970. Article 1 of this establishes the nature of the organisation of Greek schools abroad; Article 2 is concerned with the teaching staff abroad, who are paid by the Greek government. Decree Number 1197/1972 covers entrance examinations to be taken by returning migrant children who were taught privately at home; Decree Number 664/1969 governs the enrollment in Greek schools of pupils returning from Greek schools abroad.
