Program to Combat Stereotyping in Career Choice.
Harrison, Laurie R.
Divided into three sections which deal with sex, race, and handicap stereotyping in career choice, the twenty-eight programs described here attempt to combat stereotypes among students and/or staff (K-12). Most descriptions list the goals of the program, target population, staffing and management, facilities and activities, program effectiveness assessment information, suggestions for replication, and the names and addresses of contact persons. Community involvement activities, program costs, and funding sources are listed where available. Career awareness programs (Project Equality and Project Hear), and programs to increase mathematical preparation of female students (Equals) or encourage more young women to enter scientific or technical careers (Visiting Women Scientist Program) are among the nine non-sex stereotyping programs included. Of the eleven programs intended to eliminate race stereotyping, one addresses staff stereotypes (Staff Awareness) while several address the career development of native Americans (Native American Career Development Program, Alaska Careers Exploration Program) and elementary school children of all races (Individual Differences). The eight programs described in the handicapped stereotyping section include an ice cream parlor run by learning disabled students (Cold Tongue Ice Cream Parlour), a science career workshop for physically handicapped students (Your SAVE/SELPH), and an industrial arts construction project (The Shed Project, Inc.) for emotionally disturbed junior high school students.
