The homeless crisis in America is a complex issue with no "quick fixes." In Stanislaus County, California, it seems that there are many programs operating in isolation of one another. Approximately 5% of the county's population is homeless. Homeless persons have survival needs for food and clothing, hygiene, health care, affordable housing, stability, a consistent network of support, more jobs that pay a decent wage, accessible social services, special security precautions, and temporary shelter for all who need it. The homeless also have pressing educational needs, and 16 specific areas of need are cited. In an effort to establish an environment, a homeless task force represented by all community agencies, churches, and charity organizations should be developed. All entities should collaborate to develop a total service plan. The government must adequately fund social programs to eliminate poverty. The cycle of poverty must be broken by providing the funds to adequately house, feed, and clothe the poor. The necessary follow-up interventions must be provided to give innocent children a chance for success. A concerted effort must be made to provide adequate information to all citizens concerning the causes and magnitude of the homeless problems. Public support is essential.
