Undergraduate Student Happiness and Academic Performance: A Correlation Study
Langevin, Elizabeth L.
ProQuest LLC, D.M. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between undergraduate student happiness and academic performance (GPA), controlling for age, gender, and race/ethnicity for third and fourth year business students at University of Phoenix, Little Rock Campus. The eight-item Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) was used to measure the independent variable of student happiness (Hills & Argyle, 2002). Cronbach's alpha yielded a reliability coefficient of a= 0.50, indicating unacceptable reliability for the happiness indicator. A Pearson correlation assessed if an association existed between happiness scores and GPA scores. The result of the correlation was not statistically significant, r(73) = 0.20, p = 0.087. A linear regression was conducted to assess if (after controlling for age, gender, and race) happiness predicted GPA. The covariates along with happiness in the regression model, predicted GPA. For this model, happiness accounted for a significant portion of the variance in academic performance over and above age, gender, and race/ethnicity.
