The Value of Green Technology at ABC Community College

A challenge facing community colleges nationwide is to reduce the carbon footprint of campuses by initiating green technology initiatives. This case study assessed the effect of switching from paper assignments to a learning management system at ABC Community College. The topic is important because federal and state funding, as well as accreditation, is partially based on decreasing the college's carbon footprint. Theoretical support for this investigation was developed from studies on learning management systems and green technology initiatives. Data collection involved interviews with 10 students, 10 faculty, and 10 staff members of ABC Community College. The themes and patterns that emerged from conversations related to collaboration, culture, decision-making, education, expectations, motivation, policy, resources, and technology. Each theme connected to the accessibility of this green technology initiative by the participant, whether it was as student, faculty or staff. Most participants believed environmental factors exceeded social and economic factors as the perception for the selection of this green technology initiative. Environmental factors may have a profound positive effect on green technology initiatives based on these perceptions.
