Developing "Green" Business Plans: Using Entrepreneurship to Teach Science to Business Administration Majors and Business to Biology Majors
Letovsky, Robert; Banschbach, Valerie S.
Journal of College Science Teaching, v40 n6 p24-29 Jul 2011
Biology majors team with business administration majors to develop proposals for "green" enterprise for a business plan competition. The course begins with a series of student presentations so that science students learn about the fundamentals of business, and business students learn about environmental biology. Then mixed biology-business student teams prepare a comprehensive business plan for a hypothetical green business start-up. The plans include a discussion of the environmental problem(s) that the proposed product or service addresses, along with a detailed discussion of the financial, managerial, and marketing steps needed to bring the product or service to market. The completed plans are entered into the college's annual business plan competition in which finalists present their plans in front of a panel of outside judges, including investors, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs. The experience gives students insight into the dynamics of cross-functional teaming and the challenges of learning differing vocabularies and ways of looking at problems, thus modeling what many of them will experience in the workforce.
