Virginia Tech Campaign to Count Gifts Made to Victims
Strout, Erin
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n10 pA22 Nov 2007
Virginia Tech has decided to count gifts to a memorial fund for victims of the April 16 shootings toward its goal of raising $1-billion in a capital campaign. Higher-education fund-raising experts agree that counting the memorial-fund contributions toward the total does not break common donation-reporting guidelines. Many big college fund-raising drives, including Virginia Tech's, are called "comprehensive," meaning they are broad in scope and purpose, so almost any gift that is received within the seven-year time frame is considered part of the campaign. Standards issued by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education recommend that during the quiet phase of a campaign, colleges limit the gifts counted toward a fund-raising goal to those meant for featured objectives of the overall campaign. The Virginia Tech campaign is focused on creating endowed chairs, professorships, undergraduate scholarships, research facilities, and a new performing-arts center. Gifts to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, which now amount to about $8-million, are being used for scholarships and for payments to the families of the 32 people killed and to others wounded in the massacre.
