This handbook is written for the principal of an inner-city school in the belief that the principal who respects the people with whom he works, who encourages them in planning to achieve mutually agreed-upon goals, who trusts them with real responsibility, and who supports their efforts has a greater chance of being an affective school administrator. This handbook is designed to help you get a handle on those things that may work well for you. Each chapter in this handbook depicts a different principal in a different school dealing with a different problem. Each principal brings his or her own personality and skills to the task of running an inner-city school. Probably you are a composite of the principals depicted. Certainly you face similar problems. (1) Who charts the course for the school? (2) How can you get the school staff to work with you? (3) How can you avoid getting too far away from the classroom? (4) If parents are interested in their children, why don't they show it? If the school wants and needs parents' support, how can it let them know? (5) How do you get the community to work for and not on the school? (6) How can you find time for the many things you have to do? This handbook contains suggestions for approaches that have brought positive results despite varying resources. Some of the suggestions may help you think of alternative courses of action. (Author/JM)
