Conference on Health Problems of the US-Mexico Border: Gaps in Service and How to Fill Them Proceedings (El Paso, Texas, February 27-March 1, 1985).
Russell, A. Yvonne, Ed.; Lusero, Gilberto T., Ed.
Papers presented, workshop discussions, and conference recommendations are collected in this report of a conference intended to review health needs along the United States-Mexico border and focus on what assistance might practically and realistically be given by the Carnegie Corporation and other private and public funders. Topics of discussion are border health, health promotion and disease prevention, maternal and child health, family planning, and primary care. The texts of the speeches by a speaker from the United States and a speaker from Mexico address each topic. Two papers discuss the role of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation in assisting Latin America and the role of the Pan American Health Organization. The summary of workshop discussions includes specific recommendations for cooperative efforts and agreements and identifies programs which have proven effective and should be augmented, continued, restored, or replicated at other sites. Further recommendations are made for implementing programs in health education, environmental and occupational health, health insurance, maternal and child health, and family planning. The report includes a bibliography of 112 references and a directory of conference attendees. (JHZ)
