Methods & Strategies: 5E for ELL
Gomez-Zwiep, Susan; Straits, William; Topps, Jo
Science and Children, v53 n2 p80-86 Oct 2015
Science provides a rich context for English learners (ELs) to develop language skills in meaningful ways. This article outlines steps to create a lesson that blends both inquiry science and formal English language development (ELD) strategies. The process, developed through a four-year research project in a large urban school district (Gomez-Zwiep et al. 2011), begins with a modified version of the 5E learning sequence (Bybee 1997), which the authors describe first. It is followed by a description within the 5E where EL instruction can be easily integrated.
